school support
Find out more here about school support participation assistance in schools, as well as the conditions for applying.
What are school support assistants and what do they do?
School support assistants help kids and teens with disabilities in their everyday school life. They only help students with stuff they can't do on their own because of their disability, like getting dressed, going to the bathroom, staying motivated, or focusing.
The aim is to enable participation and strengthen the independence of children and young people.
Important: School support supplements therapeutic services, tutoring, and special education, but cannot replace them. Responsibility for the educational mandate remains with the school.
Who is eligible for school support?
If a student needs support at school and this cannot be provided by the school itself, they are entitled to school support. The prerequisite for this is a recognized individual need that makes participation in everyday school life a challenge.
This entitlement is regulated in Social Code VIII (§ 35a Integration Assistance) for children and young people with mental disabilities and in Sozialggesetzbuch IX (§ 112) for people with physical or intellectual disabilities. School support therefore is a recognized service under these legal provisions. The support is tailored to individual needs and financed by youth welfare services.
